The Chair of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP), Dr. Rosina Bierbaum, presented the report of the Panel to the 66th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) on February 7, 2024.
In her report, Dr Bierbaum reviewed recent scientific findings relevant to the GEF objectives and summarized key messages from recent STAP reports, including blended finance, agrivoltaics, alternative livelihoods, environmental security, citizen science, and ecosystem-based approaches.
Among the conclusions and recommendations from the papers she presented include the need for improved guidance on different blended finance instruments, the suggestion that the GEF consider supporting countries in understanding the technological appropriateness of agrivoltaics for their specific context, and helping to put in place the needed enablers for adoption and scaling, the need for strong local stakeholder engagement when designing projects applying alternative livelihoods interventions, and the recommendation to develop criteria to guide the use of citizen science in GEF work.
